If only we lived in Kingston, as Robbie Brown’s would fast become a home away from home!
One of the best things about house sitting is that you get to explore a particular corner of the world that you may otherwise never visit.
The sun was out and we weren’t going to let a 15 minute walk stand between our parched throats and a beer or three!
Stepping into Robbie Brown’s was like pulling on that favourite pair of Levi’s; it just felt ‘right’. Relaxed service and an interesting selection of brews on tap. Yet at the same time they were just as comfortable discussing the finer points of an old school cocktail!
As with any drinking session, you’ve got to keep your tummy company!
In keeping with the vibe, selecting a meal from the short, yet eclectic menu requires a minimum of effort. Bruny Island oysters, chicken tenderloins with chipotle sauce, lamb cigars with a homemade mint sauce…all sounding very nice, but we couldn’t go past their ‘Board 1’ (of two), consisting of chicken live pate, home made salmon gravlax, cornichons, baby pickled onions, shredded pork porchetta, semi-dried tomato, basil pesto and spotty dog pickles ($23.50).
Check out the shine on that sweet gravlax! Everything was super fresh and within minutes we’d made a sizeable dent in the platter. It’s so good being able to pick and mix your sandwich toppings, trying different combinations of flavour and texture.
While sipping on a most excellent Spotty Dog pale ale, we grazed, chatted and grazed some more, watching the world go by between our comfortable seats and Kingston Beach only metres away.
And then things took a slightly bizarre detour…
It was only midday, yet the buck’s party was already in full swing! Thankfully still well-behaved, it was clearly going to end in a bang for one particular chap who was already strutting up and down the boulevard, dressed in the most sensual of leopard print bodysuits. Forget the ploughman’s platter, there were smallgoods of a different variety on display!!
Clearly rattled, the only option was a stiff drink to soothe our troubled demeanour. Simply specifying the mandatory use of gin, we left the cocktail details in the experienced hands of our trusty bartender. Before long we were enjoying the unique flavours of a classic Aviator. Not our usual choice of cocktail, yet surprisingly good nonetheless!
Overall?
Refined, without pomposity. An afternoon session at Robbie Brown’s is the perfect way to spend a lazy summer’s day!
